How are your reflection papers coming? What do you want your classmates to look at?

Until now I have confusion with the reflection paper. The things that I did not understand was, should I choose a paper to write the reflection paper or should I just mix the whole papers that I wrote for this class? Besides, I was not sure if my paper should be based on the class discussion and reading and relate to the paper I chose. Last thing is should I just use the first paper I wrote and compare to the papers that I wrote for this class. Another choice was should I compare with the papers that I wrote during high school year which definitely shows the improvement of my writing.
These are the problems that I am facing for the reflection papers.

I want my classmates to check the sentence organization and I want my classmates to check the sentence structures. It would be better if they check my grammar and repeated sentences or words however, the most important things that i want is, the organization of my paper.

Overall if I am able to solve this questions for my reflection paper then I might able to have better reflection paper. Besides, if my classmates checks the sentence organization and repeated sentences or words that it would create better paper for me.

Toward a New Consciousness

From reading the 'Toward a New Consciousness', I was able realize it talks about discrimination and racism in our world. The article, itself relates to different cultures such as Mexicans and Indians. Moreover the article discuss about the humiliation that Indians or other peoples had to suffer from Whites. Based on the reading, it seems that the whites are portrayed as a superior and powerful, however, other people than Whites seems to depicted as weaker than them. Since this article seems to look back to her experiences and emotional feelings, this article is definitely relate to reflection. Besides, this reading strongly reflect to different cultures experiences and feelings. Consequently, these are the reasons that this article is assigned for our reading assignment.

Looking back at the blogs that I have written, I was able to realize that some sentences was not well organized or run out. Due to time consumption, it seems that I was not able to have time to reorganize and edit the paragraphs or delete the repeated sentences. Now from looking back at the previous writings, I am able to realize that I need to try to proof read and make sure if the sentences or paragraphs are well organized.

Overall the reading, Toward a New Consciousness is a well written paper which reflect to the author's experiences and other peoples' experiences. Besides it seems that my previous writings needs some proof read for better sentence structure and organization.

What is reflection?

From my point of view, the definition of reflection is 'looking back.' People usually writie reflection paper after reading different articles, poems, or videos. Bascially, reflection is looking back the things that you experienced in your life and write your emotion or feelings from your reading or experience.

Once I had to watch a '9/11' documentary on September 11th. After watching the documentary, he assigned us to write a reflection paper. Although I did not know how to start the reflection paper, later I realized that the reflection paper needs a few description of the documentary with my emotion. From writing the reflction paper, I was able to understand how I felt from watching the documentary.Bascially when you reflect your thoughts and emotions is a way to write the reflection paper.

Overall, reflection is looking back at your thoughts and experiences and write your emotion and feeling. From my point of view, writing a relfection paper can help people to organize their thoughts and feeling toward things that they read or experienced.

Pocahontas (vedio + reading passage)

I used to watch Disney cartoons when I was young and Pocahontas is one of the movies that I enjoyed to watch. From a child point of view, the cartoon was depicted as interesting and colorful pictures. As I get older, my perspective have started to change. Now, I start to rethink over how Native Americans' might feel about the colonization from other countires.

From watching the cartoon, 'Pocahontas' , I felt that the immigrants or people who came from England were potrayed as a greedy and selfish people who want gold and resources in order to satisfy their lives. Besides, Native Americans and immigrants from England called them each other 'savages.' Since they are both strangers, it seems that they called them as 'savages.'

After watching the vedio, I had a chance to read a passage about pocahontas. The truth is that I was not able to understand the passage clearly, however, I was able to understand the author wrote the article based on the Native Americans. The vedio and the article is based on the Native Americans. However, from my perspective, the vedio is created from American point of view. However, the article, itself is written for the Native Americans to claim the author's opinions. Consequently, the vedio and reading passage provided me a chance to rethin about the Native Americans.

paper #2 + reaction from reading.

Until now I do not have a clear idea of my paper. However, as I brainstorm some ideas it seems that it will give some ideas for my paper. From our class discussion, I can get some ideas for my paper. Besides, it seems that some people confront gender and sexuality issues from living in modern society. Based on the ideas I should try to combine and organize for my paper.

From reading the, 'Gays and Lesbians of First Nations', I did not clearly understand the meaning of the "two spirited poeple." From my point of view, "two spirited people" is relate to bisexual. Besides, it seems that "two spirited people" are the Native American people and it seems that they are the plays important role for their tribes. Each people seems to have their role.

Although this short story breifly talks about the "two spirited people", it seems to need extra infromation for readers. I was able to have some ideas of "two spirited people", however, I was not able to specifically understand the "two spirited people."

Paper #2

Until now, I did not really think about paper #2. However, it seems that it needs some research from different sources. Although I feel that All Our Relations were easier than the Conquest, it seems that the Conquest will provide more information than All Our Relations. Compare to the Conquest, it seems All Our Relation only focus on few topics. However, the Conquest seems to focus on different topics and have a lot of sources. According to these information, I might chose to use the Conquest for paper #2, which means that my topic may focus on gender and sexuality. Due to this decision, I might need to find some journals which relate to gender and sexuality as well as a book which can support my ideas.

These days, there are a lot of issues going on in our world, especially focusing on gender and sexuality incidents. There was an incidents which relates to gender and sexuality issues. Once woman opened a door for a man and this man raped this woman. Due to the law, the government decided that it was all woman's fault and this man did not have any punishment from raping this woman. This clearly shows that the discrimination between female and male.

From the reading and the sources, I will able to write the paper #2. I might relate the readings and experiences from Egypt and the society in Middle Eastern countries. It might be a difficult task for me, however, it seems to be an interesting research paper, since it is based on the gender and sexualtiy issues.

Analyze peom ( you see this body)

I chose to analyze the poem called, 'you see this body' which is written by Marcie Rendon. After reading this poem, I felt sorry for Indians who had to suffer from humiliation and harassments. While I was reading the poem, I was able to depict a big picture of the poem however, I had hard time with analyzing each stanzas in the poem. Basically the poem I chose was about Indians who suffered from past events such as Trail of Tears and Wounded Knee. Besides, the poem express their innocents from talking about their identity. Indians lost their identity and they also do not have rights or choices to fight against the intruders. There were few stanzas which talked about the gender and sexuality in the poem. It seems that it does not directly mention about them, however, if you keep reading the poem you might able to figure out the hidden meaning that the author is trying to say. Some stanzas like, stanza 6 expresses the inequality and sexual harassments that they had to face during that period. Although I had a big picture of the poem, there were some parts that I was not able to understand. Especially, while I was reading the last three stanzas in the poem, I was not able to understand clearly. Consequently, the poem expresses their sorrow and agony that they had to face from the intruders.

Chapter 6

Based on the reading, we can research about the equality of Native Indians such as, what kind of problems or issues that are continuing in U.S.A and what kind of discrimination that they are facing from sexual harassment or humiliation. Since it was also talking about the Indians spirituality of controlling their land, I might also research about the equality of controlling the land base in U.S.A.

It seems that just keeping track of URL is more convenient however, the annoted bibliography seems to be helpful. Since the annoted bibilography explains each URL, it seems to be helpful when I need to use the information for my paper or for other uses. However, when I just site the URL, it may keep track of the sites that I used, however, it may not show the explanation of each sites. Consequently, the annote bibliography is more useful and helpful for my paper.

From my view, I prefer to use annoted bibiliography for the research paper but I would not recomment for other paper which does not need to relate to the sources that I found. Due to time cosumption, I would not recomment annoted bibiliography for other writing or paper. For some reasons, annoted time bibliography will cause time consumption for writing the papers.

Chapter 2

Comparing to chapter one, chapter two seems to specifically talks about people who got abused from boarding school. This boarding school looks like a factories or even worser than factories. This boarding school was formalized under Grant's Peace Policy in 1869. Teenagers or students were kidnapped and were treated like animals. Most people who were sent to these places were not able to survive. Some die from a massive and tremendous amount of work and some die from hunger. Later it discuss about the project they were seeking for survivors from these boarding school.

After reading this chapter, I felt sorry for people who were treated so harsh and suffer from filthy and abnormal people. I cannot believe that these situation could happen and treat human begins like animal. Some people know that discrimination and racism should not continue however, it seems that it is hard for some people to keep their promise for not discriminating others. These people might need to think as a discriminated person which might provide a chance to think the feeling of people who suffered from discrimination and racism.

From reading chapter 2, the topic discrimination and racism reminded the stories that I read in All Our Relations and society in Middle Eastern countires. All Our Relations provided me a chance to understand the sorrow and pain of Native American. Moreover, I was also able to think the society in the Middle Eastern countires. For instance, living Egypt morethan two years, I was able to realize that the society in Egypt was totally different from my country, Korea. It seemed that in Egypt women had last opportunity to claim for their rights. Also, the social inequality could be shown from their upper and lower class in Egypt.

As a result, from reading chapter two I was able to realize another society in our world which reminded the reading, All Our Realtions and the society in the Middle Eastern countreis.

Conquest - Chapter 1

" Rape is nothing more or less than a conscious process of intimidation by which all men keep all women in a state of fear." (p.7)

Chapter one was based on the discrimination and racism which was shown in Native American, African American, immigrants in States, and other countries' people. The quote strongly reflect to the whole chapter one which basically describes the fearfulness of women against the men and the humiliation that they had to experienced through their lives. The author claims that non whites were always humiliated or raped by the whites. During that time, they did not have enough power to claim for their rights or justify their innocence. One of the issues was discussing about the female Chinese immigrants who were described as prostitutes. Many native American women was raped and did not had the right to sue the people who raped them. Through the reading, I could realize that they suffered and did not have a right to claim for justice. Discrimination and racism created the invisible hierarchy which made non whites to suffer and live poor live. Basically the quote summarize the whole story that the author is trying to say in chapter one.

Video

After watching the video, ' manoomin: a Minnesota way of Life',I was able to realize that Indians are still facing problems and difficulties. Basically the video was talking about the wild rice which have harvested until these days. It seems that they are claiming that Indians might lose the right of harvesting the rice. It discussed about whether that the Indian should keep the growing the rice or not. The video shows that Indians are losing their true identity and now they do not have a power to grow rice in their land. In my opinion, the government should allow Indians to keep growing the rice. If they lose the right of growing the rice then it means that Indians are losing part of their identity.

The video reminded me the reading, ' All our relations' , which also talks about the life of Indians and difficulties that they had to faced. It seemed that both video and the reading, show the sufferings of their lives.

Chapter 3

After reading chapter 3, I once realized again that the Native American had to suffered a lot from people who came from outside of their country. Chapter 3 mainly discuss about the Innun and mention about the invaders and things that they did to them. The way they treated was so disrespectful which made me provoked while I was reading. It seems that chapter 2 and chapter 3 is discussing about different tribes of Native Americans which is the similarity of the writing style of the author.

While I was reading chapter 3, there were few things that I did not clearly understand such as, the dam issues. I have understood that building dams caused destructiveness for ecosystem and caused innocent death. However, when the author was talking about the process of construction I did not clearly understand it.

I realized that in chapter 3, that Innuns' lost their identity from invaders and start to lose their lands. Moreover, the invaders started to humiliate them and seems that they are claiming that these people are uncivilized. These shows that their identity is starting to falling apart.

Chapter 2

After reading the chapater2, I had a few questions with the paragraphs that I did not understand. However, it seems that class discussion might help me to answer my questions.

Basically chapter 2 is talking about the Seminoles and it also discuss about the panthers. Chapter two is portrayed Native Americans' sorrow and agony from losing their territory and challenges that they had to face. Native Americans' had to face face wars and they also had to move their territory. The author seems to claim that they lost their land and everything.

At the end the author depicted Whites as styrofoam cup, " The Sytrofoam cup is the white man's way. They have no rules or regulations in tehir way of life. They way they do but in reality, they do not." (All our relations, 44) She seems to claiming that their nature and everything is messed up and polluted because of intervention of Whites. Besides, she also claims that the destruction and poisoned environment is from whites and at the end of the chapter two she says, ' the Independent traditional seminoles "continue to teach us about how to be better citizents.' Perhaps, in the end, to be better humans." (All our relations, 45)

Overall, chapter two seems to portrayed Seminoles and Native Americans sorrow and agony from the experiences and challenges that they had to face from the intruders. The author is basically claming that the destruction of the envrionment and the pollution is all caused by the intervention of Whites.

Paper #1 + Chapter 1 (Feb. 9)

After finishing the paper #1, I was able to identify my identity which could not be found before. I was able to find my identity from creating, reading and writing.

From creating I was able to find the facial look which can be the small aspect of my identity. I realized that distinct appearance of people can be one of the process of finding my identity. For reading, I was able to relate to my past memories from reading the article that I read during the class and I was also able to relate to past experiences when I was high school student. I found that reading cannot be found from any other subjects for finidng my identity. From reading I was able to relate to my past experiences which was about my personality, persistence and confidence. For writing, especially writing letters or papers provided me a chance to find myself. Besides, I realized that writing letters or diaries made me to recall the past memories which helps me to identify myself. After defining these three topics I was able to find who I am. Although it seems that i did not find every parts of my identity, at least now I realize few aspects of my identity.

After finishing my paper, I did not satisfied with it. However, it seems it helped me to find some parts of my identity. Defining my identity will help me to understand myself and realize who I am. Although I had some difficulties with finding my identity, I feel like that from process of learning my identity provided me a great opportunity to find myself.

After reading chapter 1, I realized that the author is mainly discussing about the affection of polluted chemicals to American Indians. GM dump toxic chemical matericals is causing negative affect to people who live near the factory or river such as, Akwesane and Mahawks. Especially people who ate fish in the river had cancer and diseases. The American Indians who ate these fishes are claiming that GM should stop polluting the river and they need to try to recover the polluted rivers. In order to protect their health, they had to stop eating fish from the river. However, they are irritated and provoked from banning their staple food, fish. Although I was not able to understand some parts of story in the chapter one, it seems that I understand the big picture of this chapter.

Feb. 4th 2008

Although it was first time, I pretty enjoyed this writing group. I had some technology problems with opening the document and sending it to others. We were able to go over some papers, however, we were not able to comment for each papers. However, we send each others papers from using each emails. Until now I am not sure that how our group will improve and what will change but I believe that our group will get better each time.

The only thing that I did not like about my group is that they did not send any comments of my paper. If they send some comments then it might helped me a lot. In the future, I hope they will send some comments for my paper which will help me to improve my writing and organization for my paper.

Another thing that I did not like was that our group was not able to discuss and comment during the class time. Since some people did not prepare or finished the paper, they were not able to comment each others paper. Although they did not finish their paper, I think it would be much better if they keep continuing discussing their paper and check the organization. Then it mihgt help each people for writing their second draft of their paper.

I hope for next paper that my writing group will prepare for their rough draft and comments on each other peoples' paper. Even they do not prepare for their paper, I hope that each people will continue with commenting their each other paper.

Paper #1 questions

* How was it writing Draft #1? * What problems have you had? * What have you found to be easy? * So far, what's valuable in this paper? * Is it hard or easy to write 3-4 pages, double spaced on yourself? Why do you think that? *What are three things you want to talk about in your writing groups today? (Some ideas: focus, organization, audience, coherence, thesis, transitions but NOT grammar Or sentence-structure unless you are sure have no other problems )

Writing paper #1 is not a easy assignment for me. I had some hard times with writing Paper #1, especially from relating my experiences and readings to my identity. Since I had difficulties with identifying myself, it was hard for be to fill up 3-4 pages even it was double spaced. However, this assignment seem to be valuable for me because it provided me an opportunity to identify myself. Until now I have some ideas how to write my paer, however, I am confused with how to relate the experiences and readings to my identity.

For today discussion , I would like to focus an organization, transition and some sentence structures. Since I had some difficulties with identifying myself, I would like to talk about it. After solving this problem, I would like my group to read my paper and go over the sentences which need transition or sentence which really need to revise from my group. Besides, I would like my group to check the organization of my paper.

Poetry Jan 28.2008

After reading the poetry, I tried to figure out the meaning of them. However, I had a hard time with figuring out the meanings. It seems that most poetries was talking about one main idea, ' American Indian.' Plus, the authors are trying to say that American Indian has lost their identity and eager to get it back.

The poetry seem to relate to the previous reading. For instance, in the reading, the author mainly talks about the American Indian and sever lives they experienced. One of the poem that I read also talks about American Indian and she claims that they had a harsh and severe lives. She also claims that American Indians had to live lives with sorrow and grief. Basically the reading and poetry both talks about the American Indian harsh life.

The Curious Research provided an opportunity to experience the ways to research the information. It provided several different ways to research for the information. However some of the information that the book provided seems to the information that I knew before.

Analyzing poem (Helen Betty Osborne – Marilyn Dumont)

After reading the poems, I decided to analyze the poem called, ‘Helen Betty Osborne’ (Marilyn Dumont).

The first stanza, the author talks to a girl name, ‘Betty.’ In here this girl name might represent everyone who is a native girl in America or it might represent herself. The author is saying that every female native Americans and including herself are facing loneliness, anxiety, and horror from living a town where, few Indians are residing. This seems to represent their sorrow and grief.

The second stanza, basically expresses their innocence and sorrow from describing the incidents that might happened in past days. The word such as, skinning, scraping, pounding, and packing are well expressed to describe their severe lives.

The last stanza, the author is saying if she writes the poem then it will be about herself and other female native Americans who had to suffer without any reasons. At the end, she stops writing; however, it seems that she has a lot of things to tell to readers about the innocence of femal native Americans.

Identity

At least once, people might have thought about their identity from experiencing different topics they learned. One of my classes mainly discussed about identity and autobiography from using avatars and readings. From creating avatars and readings, I was able to find my true identity.

Avatars are visual representation of yourselves which shows the characters of each persons look. I created my avatar from distinguishing my facial look which contains small eyes with round nose, a birthmark, and black hairs. Especially, the location of the birthmark shows who I am and it represents only one person, myself. Creating avatar provided an opportunity to find my identity which is figuring out the characters of my face.

Avatar was just the starting point of finding my identity, after reading the articles I was able to find who I am and understand myself. Especially the article, “Gee, You Don’t Seem Like an Indian From the Reservation”, provided a great help to find my identity. This article was about an American Indian who hates and fear of white American. At the end of the article, it seems that the author found true self from confronting different experiences. Then how did this article helped me to find myself? Ok, the answer is that the reading the article reminded me the past experiences that I experienced before. Consequently, reading the article assisted me to understand myself, such as, realizing that I am a person who does not have enough confidence or persistence to concentrate.

Overall, creating avatar and reading the article helped me to find my identity. Avatar became the starting point of finding my identity and then later the article provided a chance to understand my true myself. Now I know that the characters of my face are the small eyes with round nose, location of birth point, and black hairs. Moreover, I found that I am a person who needs confidence and concentration in order to live in our society.

Monday class

Based on the Moday lecture, our class discussed about feminsim. From my understanding, feminism is an equality between men and women. Besides, based on the Oxford dictionary the definision is, the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. People who support these thoughts are called feminists. According to the lecture, some famous feminists are Thomas Paine (founding father of USA),Abigail Adams (first lady),Susan B. Anthony (women's rights movement) and Sojourner Truth (slave, abolitionist and women's rights movement)

Some negative ideas of feminsim is that they are hippies, only women, lesbians, and they do not shave. Moreover, most people think that the feminists should have generous and calm looking however, the truth is, their looking doesn't really matter. The importance thing is that the feminsts should be the person who is ready to fight for the rights for our society. They usually deal with gender inequality and claims for rights for women. For instance, they may confront some incidents such as a woman who got rapped by man or social heiracy in different regions.

From the discussion, I was able to understand who can be the feminsits and who are the famous feminists in our world. These discussion provided some chances to have some knowledges of feminists.
